Can My Employer See My AI Chats?
On a work account, someone at your company can almost always get your AI chats. Who, how, and whether deleting a chat or using a temporary one changes that depends on the tool and the plan. Here are four tools side by side, every answer linked to the vendor's own documentation.
By Gabe Pérez. I sell Claude setup to small teams, so weigh what I say about the others. Researched with Claude from each vendor's own documentation, then re-checked source by source. Nothing was tested inside a live workspace. Checked November 5, 2026.

What stands out
- On every work plan here, some role can get your chat text, usually by export, a compliance feed, eDiscovery or Vault. Microsoft’s eDiscovery and Google Vault can also preview chats on screen, and Microsoft’s diagnostic-log tool shows recent ones in the admin center. OpenAI’s own pages disagree about what ChatGPT Business admins can see.
- A temporary chat hides from your history, not from your company. Claude’s incognito chats are in org exports, ChatGPT Enterprise keeps temporary chats in its Compliance API for 30 days, and Microsoft says admins reach them in Purview. Gemini is the exception: without Vault, it doesn’t log them at all.
- Deleting is weakest where a retention tool runs. Microsoft Purview policies and Google Vault rules can keep deleted chats, and ChatGPT Enterprise’s logs keep them 30 days. On Claude Team, a deleted chat drops out of later exports.
- How many people can reach your chats varies a lot. Claude Team has one Primary Owner who can export. ChatGPT Business can have several owners. Every Google super admin can export, on every edition. On Microsoft 365 it’s whoever an admin gives the eDiscovery role.
- None of the four tells you when someone searches or exports your chats. Google comes closest: every super admin gets an email when a Data Export starts.
- Only Claude Enterprise writes AI reports from sampled transcripts, and they’re off by default with names hidden. ChatGPT Enterprise’s Task insights sorts conversations by topic, never by person.

How I Checked
One person read four vendors' documentation on one day. Here's what that can and can't tell you.
- Yes
- The vendor's documentation says so.
- Partly
- Yes with a condition: a setting, a role, an add-on or a time limit. The detail says which.
- No
- The documentation says no, or describes the feature in a way that rules it out.
- Unclear
- Not documented, or the vendor's own pages disagree. Assume the less private answer until someone tests it.
- Doesn't apply
- The question doesn't fit that plan, usually because no company is attached to it.
- Researched with Claude, from the vendors’ own pages. One pass read each vendor’s help, admin and legal documentation and drafted the answers. A second, separate pass re-opened every cited page and corrected what didn’t match. Third-party pages appear only where they’re labeled in a post.
- Nothing was tested in a live workspace. Licenses, add-ons and settings change what applies to you. Each answer names the condition where one matters, and each tool’s post goes further.
- Vendors’ pages sometimes disagree. OpenAI’s help center and its enterprise privacy page disagree about what ChatGPT Business admins can see. Where that happens the answer says Unclear and the post explains.
- Plans are grouped by what changes the answer. Gemini splits on whether your company has Vault, not on edition names. ChatGPT Edu sits with Enterprise. Microsoft’s free Copilot Chat and paid Microsoft 365 Copilot stay separate because their admin tools differ.
- Your company’s own monitoring isn’t counted. Network inspection, endpoint software and screen recording can see what you type into any of these, whatever the AI vendor allows. This page covers what each vendor’s own tools hand your employer.
- It isn’t legal advice. Notice rules for workplace monitoring differ by country and state. Ask a lawyer where you are.
